The
Bluenose was known as the queen of the North Atlantic and was a
champion racer and fishing vessel who fished off the Grand Banks.
During her career, she bested all the fishing vessels from New England
who competed against her in races, winning many trophies, and proving
she had the gift for speed.
On Jan. 28, 1946, the Bluenose was lost in a storm off Haiti, laden with
cargo. Her legacy, however, still
lives on in the photography of Wallace R. MacAskill.

| Organ Grinder, Halifax, NS (1924) Photographer: W.R. MacAskill |

Code Number: KP-04, Category: Kids and People
|
This charming photograph was taken on Barrington Street in downtown
Halifax, perhaps close to where MacAskill had his photography studio.
It shows a group of young boys watching an old organ grinder play his
music on a sunny afternoon.
The historic buildings that still stand
today and vintage cars can be scarcely glimpsed in the background that
fades into a misty haze. |

Taken
in the idyllic fishing village of Peggy's Cove, this image shows a
fisherman, a young boy with his toy ship and a dog silhoutted against
the sky, with the historic lighthouse on the craggy
rocks in the background.
Named after the only survivor of a schooner that ran aground and sank
in 1800, Peggy's Cove is considered to be the jewel of Nova Scotia and
is one of the most visited scenic spots in the province.

| The Convoy in Bedford Basin, N.S. (1942) Photographer: Unknown |

Code Number: MSA-81, Category: Military Ships After 1940
|
This
photo portrays over 50 military Allied ships
awaiting deployment as a "fast convoy" in the large basin at the end of Halifax Harbour,
called Bedford Basin.
The Harbour's entrance was protected by the
city's defences and by submarine nets stretched across the Harbour
mouth to keep out U-boats.
This aerial view is from the head of the Bedford Basin looking south toward the
Atlantic. The peninsula of Halifax is the dark mass to the top of
the photo.
